On the Terri Schiavo matter - I was WRONG
Posted by Gun-Toting Liberal @ 6/15/2005 05:10:00 PM
Some of you will remember how I was one of the loneliest Liberals in the bloggosphere during Terri's last days and weeks on the feeding tube. In fact, I think there were only two, maybe three of us total. I was fighting my fellow Liberals tooth and nail on this issue, and now I'm going to say, you were right, I was wrong.
Although, it is not easy for me to admit when I am wrong, it's a matter of integrity to do so. So again; I WAS WRONG (source: CNN).
Directly from the mouth of the Coroner:
"Schiavo's brain damage "was irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons," Thogmartin said."
"He said, the vision centers of her brain were dead, meaning she was blind. And his examination showed she would have been unable to take nourishment by mouth because of the danger she might aspirate the food."
Alright... he's the expert, not I, so I'll just take his word for it; Terri's body was a "human life FORM", and not really a "human life" at the time the feeding tube was removed. As many Liberal bloggers pointed out during the fiasco; Terri had long gone to be with Jesus in Heaven, and it was I who had a hard time accepting that. She was blind, she was brain dead, she was in a persistent vegetative state (PVS), end of story.
But there were some great things that happened as a result of the Schiavo case. The Citizens learned just how important a living will can be, and how each and every one of us should have one if we don't already. Bonds were made between myself and some "right-wing" types that continue to this very day that most likely wouldn't have occurred otherwise. You know them because they post here regularly in the comments sections, and have become an important part of this blog.
I also learned a lesson about letting the law and not my emotions guide my stances on important issues. In fact, in the back of my mind the whole time, I remember thinking that the "States rights" people had a really good point. I had no argument for this other than the counterargument that "God can work miracles", "who cares about the law, a human life is at stake here". Well, it is now clear to me now that it would have had to be one heck of a miracle, in effect, equaling raising the dead. The "human life" that was Terri Schiavo had long departed.
Yes, I was wrong, but THIS time, I am glad I was. Blog ON.
